Eat Mor Chikin!

It looks like we did not have to wait long from the last entry for the news storm to hit.  Several big announcements were unloaded on Thursday and the ripple effects were felt all across the company.  Obviously the biggest announcement was the forthcoming shutdown of Lynx Aviation beginning in April and concluding in September.  A prepared announcement was read to employees at Lynx headquarters by Cam Kenyon and also webcast for all employees. It was very touching to hear the emotion in Cam's voice and good to see that he genuinely cares for his employees.  With RAH, this is becoming more the exception than the rule.  Penny Parker from the Denver Post even picked up on this story in her column:

I can just see it now, Wayne Heller smacking on his gum, resisting the urge to blow bubbles, longing to leave so he can make his flight back to Indy for a Chick-Fil-A sandwich and day dreaming about waffle fries. Apparently his love for Chick-Fil-A is legendary according to the Indianapolis circuit of RAH.

I feel terrible for the Lynx employees.  While it may be argued that the Frontier employees were not given a fair shake in their relocation announcement/timeframe, they were at least given something.  They had the option of keeping their current jobs at their current pay.  Why are the Lynx employees not getting this same or a similar offer? There are plenty of positions that Frontier employees did not accept that would be perfect for Lynx employees who may wish to relocate to Indianapolis.  I guess they will just have to apply and be invited to a "preferential interview". 

Another classy move by RAH in giving the Lynx employees almost exactly the minimum 60 days notice as required by the WARN Act before throwing them out on the street.  I wish the Lynx employees the best of luck in their "preferential interviews". I realize that Brian Bedford stated from the beginning that it would be hard to justify an 11 aircraft fleet, but 60 days notice is ridiculous and a slap in the face of many employees who worked 60 hour weeks starting up Lynx and making it a top notch airline. 

Not all of the news Thursday was negative. Seven new cities and frequency increases to several other cities were announced.  New service  includes new nonstop service to Branson MO. Grand Rapids MI, Long Beach CA, Madison WI, Newport News VA, Santa Barbara CA, and seasonal nonstop service to Green Bay WI.  Frequency increases included a third daily flight to LaGuardia, and a fifth daily flight to Portland, OR, San Francisco, and Seattle. Most of the new service will be with Republic E-190 equipment.

It appears that the plan is to grow "away" from Southwest and in some cases even United.  Also interesting to note is that there were no announcements concerning growth in Milwaukee.  I suppose this confirms the theory that the Milwaukee market is severely under-performing. I would not be surprised if some of the Airbus that have been deployed to MKE are re-deployed back to Denver in time for the summer.

I also heard that Frontier's advertising agency Sticky Grey was turned loose this week.  I have not seen any announcements confirming this, but if it is true, it's very disheartening. For eight years, Grey has created an award winning advertising program that is truly loved in Denver and known nationally.  If this turns out to be confirmed, it is my opinion that this is the death blow for the Frontier brand, and may actually be the first step in the branding and marketing decisions that are due to be announced in the near future.

I can't wait to see which road Mr. Bedford decides to go down next.

  3. I LOVE YOU! I have no friggin idea who you are, but you are saying what most F9 employee's are feeling. I would get in trouble if I shared my true feelings about Reverend Bedford and his bible. It is completely deplorable what has been done to Lynx, and Frontier. To give Lynx employee's minimal notice shows how deeply RAH and the Reverend care about their employee's. Where in the hell are these people suppose to go? RAH's preferential interview is a joke. How these yahoo's sleep at night I will never know. Hopefully, not with chewing gum in their mouth!

    Keep blogging. Why does there have to be a purpose for this? You are not trying to pass legislation for god's sake. If you don't like it DONT READ IT. Don't let anyone give you shit. Your blog is very well liked by the people I know=)

  4. You aren't the first to say that the "preferential interview" is a joke.

    Obviously, the pilots cannot move to Republic or Frontier.

    But of Lynx's 400 employees, only 120 of them are pilots. Certainly the 110 FA's could move to Republic, I would think. I don't have any idea how the rest of Lynx's employees break down but I would guess a substantial portion of them would also be needed by Republic to get the Lynx routes flown. Please correct me if I am wrong.

    As far as Lynx's pilots go, obviously it depends on what happens to the aircraft. If they go out of the country or to an airline with a furloughed pilots, they obviously will not be able to continue to fly Lynx's Q400s. If there is a chance that they will go to a US airline w/o furloughed pilots, I would think that they would have a good chance to stay with the aircraft, if they are willing to relocate.

    I probably will regret asking this, but what has been so deplorable about what Bedford has done to Frontier (sans Lynx)?

  5. Actually the Lynx pilot groups fate has nothing to do with the aircraft. Unless the entire operation is sold the pilots are separate from the aircraft, it will not matter where the airframes go they won't be flown by Lynx pilots.

    To the blogs anonymous author.. keep up the good work. Wish more people would have had this understanding last summer. While SWA would have eliminated the F9 brand most of the employees would have ended up well off. Now the brand will die and take the employees down with it.

  6. The advertising agency is a good one...but totally out of touch with what is really happening at the airline. It is NOT a "Whole Different Animal". Jeff Potter and crew saw to that - they were running an airline that was very similar to United. A TV in a seat back does not make you a whole different animal when everything else is run like a major carrier. Southwest saw this and "came to town."

    What would prevent Lynx pilots from interviewing and getting hired on at the airline that takes the Q-400s?

    Porter Aviation in Toronto is taking 2 new planes this spring and presumably will need to hire pilots.

    I suspect Air Canada Jazz might end up with Lynx's Q-400s but they probably already have all the pilots they need as the Q-400s would replace existing aircraft.

  9. I had no idea Jazz Air would make an announcement today. Jazz Air placed an order with Bombardier for 15 Q400s plus 15 options. The first one arrives May 2011.

  10. Unless you already have right to work in Canada, good luck, they're (the Canadian govt) not allowing any company to use HR sponsorship to get right to work status.

    Why should Lynx guys give up seniority (albeit minimal) and move to the bottom of the list by re-interviewing for a list they should already be on?

    Well two things, one it would have to be a US company or a third world country. Get work authorization to fly in Canada or the EU is next too impossible. Second piloting is a completely seniority based industry. The pilots could go fly Q400's for another carrier sure, starting over at the very bottom of the seniority list with no days off and making 18K a year. The thousands of hours they have accumulated in the aircraft would mean nothing.

  12. I see that the rumor about Sticky Grey being given the chop has been denied by Frontier and dismissed as exactly that - a rumor.

    I see that Mr Bedford has told the Denver Post that more route announcements are on the way. MKE, perhaps? Or MCI?

  13. We at Midwest Airlines feel for the Lynx crewmembers. If you need to learn how file for unenmployment, apply for food stamps, energy assistance, Cobra, or beg, borrow or steal, just ask a Midwest Airlines pilot or flight attendant. Welcome to the party!
